The Fancy Spoon and Yellow Cup
So, we have this one fancy spoon in our silverware drawer. I am not sure how we came in possession of this lone fancy spoon. Perhaps it was accidentally swiped from a restaurant, perhaps spoon fairies bestowed us with this precious scooping device, or maybe we have had it all along and I never gave it any notice....until now.
For any of you with siblings, you know what happens when there is only "one" of something. For my family, it was a plastic yellow cup. My four older brothers and I would sit around the breakfast table waiting for our juice, praying we would be the lucky kid to get the special cup. What made this cup so special? It was the same shape, size and material as the others...but the others were a yucky mustard yellow, and this cup, the prized cup, was the color of sunlight. It made juice taste jucier, it was like drinking from a goblet made for a king. Whoever got this cup was obviously the most loved child in the family.
It all seems so silly now, but that yellow cup was the one thing that was different, the one thing that could make you unique and special. For those few minutes around the breakfast table, you were king (or queen, on the off chance I got the cup). For my girls, that fancy spoon with the swirl pattern is it. They will race to set the table just so they can place the fancy spoon at their spot. They will shut the silverware in grave disappointment when they discover that the spoon is in the dishwasher. Food tastes bland without it. The other spoons don't scoop as well and eating is close to impossible without the fancy spoon.
Life is funny like that, isn't it? We may have something that does everything the "it" thing does, but because it is not the color of sunshine, or it lacks a certain fanciness, we are discontent.
1 Timothy 6:6-8
"Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content."
And don't even get me started on the banana with the sticker on it.....
